As you see for my posting rythm, I'm still very busy. Very, very busy. But, I always try to get the most of my spare time and work a little bit in "15 Días" in order to make some progress.

One of the points that always caused discussion every time I showed my old "15 Días" prototype was icons. I drew an artistic icons for my game, triying to keep the baroque theme and references about the book the game is based in, Grand Annals of 15 Days, by Francisco de Quevedo.

Well, after game tests, some people told me that they love my icons because they're allegorical and works properly with game's theme. But, some other people told me that they weren't clear and useful, and they takes some time to remember what every icon do into the game.

Ok, judge of Solomon solution. I add made a little frame to the ability icons, to explain what this ability do into the game:

What do you think? Do you like it?

Ah! I've worked in a little frame for the court abilities range:
¿Que opináis? ¿Os gusta?

¡Ah!
I hope you like it!

Cheers!
¡Espero que os guste!
¡Saludos!

I've been lately talking about graphic design changes in 15 Days. What are these changes? Well, take a look to this new Court Card work-in-progress illustration: He estado hablando últimamente sobre cambios en el diseño gráfico de 15 Días.
It's still half way to be finished but I think that it's a good example of the new "face" of the game.

I've tried to get a more serious appearance for the game according to its historical theme. And I've tried to make the card more clear and ordered.

What do you think? Do you like this new design?

Cheers!

45 days without posting...

I´m really sorry about that, but last month I was very busy (and, in fact, I'm still very busy) with commissions and...

... working in a new version for 15 Days, as I told you before holidays break. Yes, a new and de-fi-ni-ti-ve version.

In one hand, the new rulebook is almost over. I've spent several months working on it and doing game tests. By the moment all works properly, even I send it to a spanish print & play contest (and 15 Days is one of the eight short-listed games!). Perhaps, in a few weeks, I could show you a de-fi-ni-ti-ve rulebook.

In the other hand, graphically the game is far from over. 15 Days contains sixty-five different characters, and more than eighty illustrations including icons, backgrounds... finish it is going to be an epic effort, but ...

... now I'm a step closer. Here you are the Governess of the Queen. The first of the characters I did with the new style for the new vesion.

What do you think?

Cheers!

This week post is another little thought about creating a game and "15 Days"

Three months ago I released the first beta version of "15 Days" rules. Since that moment I've shown my prototype in a couple of games conventions and I've sent some print & play files to people who told me that they want a game prototype copy.

Even the game prototype was mentioned in some blogs and boardgames podcasts.

And all these people have given me a lot of feedback. Believe me, a lot. I'm impressed and really happy for this, because I think feedback is the only way to improve the game.

That's reason things are moving slowly for here in the last weeks: I'm preparing a new verión (0.2.0) of "15 Days" and right now I'm immersed in private testing. And I think this new versión is going to be very close to the final version, so you're still in time to send me your comments for 0.1.0 version.

What's the moral of this post? Take note of all comments people give you, good ones and bad ones. I'm sure new "15 days" is far better any game I would had made alone. I start to understand that to be a game designer have two steps. First, you create a game from scratch, but after that, you become a manager for all the ideas testers gives you, deciding how to implement them in your game. Obviously, not all the ideas will work, but every comment must be heard and tested. And never forgotten.

To have a good game prototype is not to have a good game. And a good idea always need a lot of work.

I'll write more about new versión changes in future posts.

Cheers!

¡Saludos!

Every post I've written for this blog was preceded by a WIP illustration.

Usually, this illustration didn't have any relation with my projects, but not this time.

Look what I'm working on:

Here you are, (still unfinished) cover illustration for my "15 Days" prototype.

From now, I'm going to use the top illustration in every post to show you WIP illustrations for "15 Days". I think it's a good way to show you how the game is progressing. And... it helps to finish the art work before I grow old.

Cheers!

MY 15 MINUTES (PART 2/2)

*Part 1/2 in this post*

Back in my house from the game prototypes meeting I received a tweet. It was from Circulo de Isengard a game association from Madrid, very near from where I live.

<Would you like to come to our association and show us your game?>

What??? Me? My game? Of course I want!!!

A week later I spent a a wonderful time showing them how my game works and they made this:

<¿Te gustaría venir a enseñarnos tu juego?>

¿¿¿Qué??? ¿Yo?¿Mi juego?

Simply incredible. Thank you very much, guys, that is awesome.

A few days after this event, Bayuca blog, a spanish blog about swashbuckling, write another review about my game. They ask me for a print and play versión weeks before and their feedback was very useful for me.

Review

I love Bayuca blog, and see my game reviewed there is something that makes me really, really happy.

And finally, two spanish boardgames podcast, Ojo al dado and Días de Juego, talked about the game prototypes meeting in La Almunia, and they says very kind words for my game.

Ojo al Dado

Días de Juego

What now? I don't know but it doesn't matter. The work is done. Just finish it with more illustrations.

After all, this is not a post to feed my own ego. No. My game is the same game that it was the last month. No, this is a post about the happiest thing in game creator's life: See how other people play and enjoy your game.

Deeply Yours. Thank you, thank you, thank you for all of this.

Gonzo

Profundamente vuestro. Gracias, gracias y gracias por todo esto.

MY 15 MINUTES (PART 1/2)

March 15th,16th and 17th, I attended to the II Prototypes Meeting in La Almunia, Zaragoza, Spain.

This is a meeting between boardgames creators ( game designers, graphic artists, publishers...) and players to play game prototypes.

I took with me my "15 Days" prototype. It was the first time that I showed it to gamers community... and I have to admit that I was worried. Really, really worried.

I trust in my game, but you know, there was professionals with years of experience there, people who knows a lot about boardgames. I was worried I was not on par with them.
I'm a fool. That was not the point of this meeting.

All was extremely great fun. It was an amazing experience. 45 game lovers talking and playing in an incredible creative and altruistic atmosphere. Nothing I've seen before in any other convention.

I could play some prototypes and the level of these games was really high, surpassing all my expectations. I wrote a review about the games I played in BSK (a spanish forum about boardgames). You can read it (in spanish) in this thread.

About "15 Days", well, it was played three times (that is a very good number of times) and everybody who played it seemed enjoying the game and having some fun. Even some people ask me for my game recommended by others who had played it before. What can I say? I don't know, I just didn't expect that.

In addition, a lot of people gave me useful comments and recomendations about improvables details. I've noted all of them, I swear you.

All this meeting was organized by Ludo (a Spanih game creators association). Thank you for this amazing work. I'll promise you to be back the next year.

So, back in Madrid, happy but tired. What an experience... Now? Back to work? No, this was just the beginning of my 15 minutes...

To be continued
Soy idiota.

Continuara

Short post this week. Just a few news about my projects. Sorry.

In one hand, "Bossuelt project" is into researching phase at this moment. I bought some books last week to learn more about units, formations, etc at renaissance and baroque periods. I'm done with Spanish army, but if someone want to send me some information about other countries, it would be a great help.

I have some plans for this project. First of all, I don't want to use dice (or cards used like dice) for this game. I'm working in an alternative system. In addition, I want to do a mini solo game to test this system.

I'll talk more about all of this in a future post.

In the other hand, I'll attend to a game prototypes creator meeting here in Spain this weekend. I'll take "15 Days" with me and I hope to receive a lot of critiques that help me to improve my game.

Next week I'll show you some pictures of this event. Wish me luck.

Deseadme suerte.
(Oh, I almost forget it. Court Card is over. Yay!)

Cheers!

Sometimes, something that is yours grows and start to be propierty of more people. That's good, it's a natual law and... it's the designer's goal.
I feel something like that with "15 Days". I had a plan for it when the idea comes 8 months ago but now, there are more people involved in this project: testing the game, giving me advice... and I feel that this is no my project anymore, it's our project.

If things go well, I hope give you great news about the game along this year. A lot of them, but, for the moment, I must be focused in finish all the illustrations.

And this is not a blog about illustrations, this is a blog about projects.

So, while I work in illustrations for "15 Days", it's time to retake "Beleg project" and time for a new projects. I have another game in mind. It's just an indeterminate idea, but I think it could be funny write here about it.

My new plan now is try to alternate  "15 Days" posts with other projects posts while my game is growing. I'm not going to stop posting about "15 Days" but now I know that it's a longer process than I expected and I don't want to bore you.

What do you think? Are you interested in a new project? or to know how "Beleg project" is going on?

Cheers!

¡Saludos!

Here you are. Version 0.1.0 rulebook for "15 Days", my first game:
Click on the image to see the file
I hope you like it.

Game cards are not finished yet, but if you want a prototype version (a very rough one, but completely playabe) feel free to send me and e-mail asking for the link. As I write in older posts, I know people usually don't want to play unfinished and ugly games, but if this is not a problem for you, your feedback and comments will be a great help for me.

And... sorry if my english is too bad. I've try to do my best with the rules, but I know my english translation could be a little bit confused. Any help to improve it will be appreciated.

Cheers!

¡Saludos!

To create something is always a challenge. A challenge for your skill, for your perseverance and for your weak points.
No new drawings this week. I've spent last days focused in writing an ¿official? rulebook for "15 Days".

Ok, I've created a boardgame and ok, I have a lot of handwriting notes about the game rules. Now, take all that notes and write a rulebook, trying to be clear, specific and correct is a new kind of nightmare I've recently discovered.

Concepts are simple in my mind, but when I try to write them, eveything looks messy  and confused. Now I respect writers even more.

In the next week I'll sent some prototypes to people who show me some interest in test my game and with their help, I hope to have rules ready to be posted next week. We will see...

Cheers!

Veremos...

Do you remember the tough guy? Well, here he is in color: ¿Recordais al tio duro? Bien, aqui esta en color:
I have a lot of illustrations in progress and I haven't posted nothing really finished for al long time so, what do you think?

Something finished...

15th, 16th and 17th of march in La Almunia (a town near Zaragoza, here in Spain) there will be a "Prototype meeting" . A game creator convention where they bring their game prototypes to be tested. Sounds good, really, really good.

I'd like to attend but I'm not sure if "15 Days" will be finished (I'm more than 70 illutrations away). It's a prototype convention, but you know what I think about people playing unfinished and ugly games. No, "15 Days" must be finished... or at leats almost finished... or maybe... Ahg! I can't decide what to do!.

Hmmm... it's going to be a long, long month...

Cheers!

No, "15 Días" debe estar acabado... ó al menos casi acabado... o quizás... ¡Agh! ¡No puedo decidir que hacer!

Va a se un mes muuuuy largo...

Let me use this post as a little catharsis, as a little comfort for my doubts.
As you could see, above these lines, I'm still working in icons for "15 Days". It's a hard and slow work. Very, very slow work. Don't misinterpret me, I'm very proud of my work, very happy with the results, but I feel some doubts.

In the last posts I've wrote about how I got the idea for the game, where I found historical researching or about things I've learned in this process, but, you know, I still don't show you nothing completely finished.

Well, I'd really like to share with you more things, but I'm not sure that it's a good idea before I finish all the illustrations. During testing process, I've seen an amateur game, half-way to be finished and roughly sketched is not very attractive for players. I know, prototypes must be useful, not beautiful, but a lot of people don't want to play ugly games, believe me.

That's the reason I haven't posted rules or cards yet. I want to share "15 Days" beta version and get some feedback that help me to improve the game and I feel that's not possible if my game looks unfinished and "no professional".

So, I'll continue posting work in progress illustrations until I finish everything. It's going to be a long road, but I hope you enjoy the ride as much as I.
No me malinterpretéis.

It's my first game after all, but I think "15 Days" it's not a bad game. Be patient and let me show you it complete.

Cheers!

Creating a game system for "15 Days", I've learned some things that help me along this way, and I think could be possitive to share with you.

I know, I know, it's my first game, and I am nobody to teach other people about how to create a game, BUT during this process some game creators, with more experience than me, give me good advices and help me testing the game. I really appreciate that and if my sort experience could help another creator, I think it's my duty to write this post.

Here we go:

1. First idea never works. Sadly, everything looks better in your mind than over the table. Don't throw that idea out, just work on it. It could take you to fix it or perhaps to a better idea.

2. Write everything. Memory is fragile and you can lose your best idea. Take notes of everything and write the date in every note. From time to time, read all your notes and you'll discover that ideas you leave behind are now solutions for your current problems.

3. If you feel stuck in the middle of the process, stop inmediatly. Do another things. Don't give up, just take a short time for yourself and back to work. Solution will appear then.

4. Trial and error, always try and error. Don't be afraid to fail with a prototype, it's a opportunity to make a better game. The only way to know if one idea works is put it on the table.

5. It's your game. When you feel ready to show your game to other people, you must pay attention to all his comments and take notes. All the comments are beneficial, good ones and bad ones, they show what you have to improve and what you have to boost. But remember, it's your game, your idea, you must choose if something must be changed in your game.

I know they are general advices, but never forget them during your game creation process.

Now, I'll continue working in these icons for my game.

Cheers!

I like games with an interesting subject matter. A good game is a good game, obviously, but abstract games tends to bore me.

Perhaps it is due to I studied dramatic art years ago but I need to feel I play an especific role when I play a game. In a game about Star Wars, for example, I don't play in the same way if a choose the imperial side or the rebel side.

When I decided to create a game, first of all was chose a theme and after this, I tried to create a game system to represent that theme.

In "15 Days" 's case the theme is the death of Philip III of Spain and the court confrontation between two families to become his son, Phiplip IV, favorite minister. First problem I found was how to show this specific historic moment. I read some books about that period for researching and inspiration. The following three books help me a lot:

Grand Annals of fifteen days, by Francisco de Quevedo. This book is the game's father (And gives the game its name). The Spanish dramatist relate in this book what happen in the Spanish court after Philip III's death.

Only Madrid is court, by Alonso Nuñez de Castro. A good and contemporary view over Spanish court and its members in 17th century.

The King is having fun, by Jose Deleito y Piñuela. The story of Philip IV's life and his amusement.

The second problem I found was how to transform all the information I had in a game system. I'll write about that in my next post.

Cheers!

Logo for "15 Days" is almost finished: El logo de "15 Días" esta casi acabado:
The idea of making a game has been in my mind as long as I can remember. In fact, when I was a child, I created some games for my own fun. I love gaming so, it's funny that never try it again until now.

When I started to thinking seriously about it I was sure that my first game would be a board game. Or better, a card game.  Yes, a card game: fast, simple and easy to share on internet.

I wanted a confrontation card game, like Magic: The Gathering, for example. My first plan was a fencing duel between players but one day (few week before I started this blog) looking for a book in my little renaissance library I saw "Grand Annals of Fifteen Days" by Francisco de Quevedo.

!That was simply perfect! ¡A court confrontation instead a physical one! Suddenly a lot of possibilities blew up in my mind: alliances, treason, power, control... And then the big idea came to me: a confrontation between two families, The Rojas-Sandovals, near to the power for years, and The Zuñiga-Olivares, and ambitious family, eager to power, but with only one winner: a new and almighty favorite for the new king.

In these moment, I took a pen and a piece of paper, "Osuna project" was born.

I'll see you in 2013!. happy new year!

"Osuna project" no more: Nunca mas "Proyecto Osuna":

The game is almost ready for an open beta version. At least, my work as game designer is over for now: the game is tested, corrected and ready for playing. What a hard work!

It's time for my favorite part: illustration. During the next weeks, while I'm drawing and laying out all the game, I'm going to write some post talking about all the process until this point. Finally, at the beginning of 2013, the game (rules and cards) will be released.

Stay alert, because things starts to moving fast here.

Cheers!

(Note: The game logo is just sketched. Don't panic!)

24.

What a two weeks!

I've spending last two weeks testing and testing "Osuna project". More than twenty-five games in fifteen days... it's a good start.

First of all, thank you, THANK YOU to all the people who play the game in this days. Thank you for your patience, your opinions, your advices and your support.

Well, conclussions: I like how the game works, but there are things that must be improved. I've seen some details that still doesn't work properly.

1. The game is more chaotic than I expected. I wanted a little chaos (like life in a 17th century court) but not so much. I fear sometimes players didn't know if they were playing correctly.

2. Too many characters with too many different abilities. I'm thinking make the game more simple restricting abilities to five or six. This new kind of abilities will mark how characters are connected.

3. The game need more "flavor" of the period. This is the hardest point... I need to think more about that.

He visto algunos detalles que no funcionan correctamente.

But after all, I'm very happy. The game core works and it's time to think in the printable version.

Hard work ahead. A lot of illustrations must be finished. A rulebook must be written. Version 0.1.0 is at the end of the way.

Cheers!

¡Saludos!
