I'm still sketching "Beleg project" pages.

Lately I'm thinking a lot about historical characters in my comic. How did they be? Everybody can read what they did, but what about their personalities, their feelings, their motivations...

It's quite fun think about it. Take them and put into your story and, the hardest work, make them work as characters, being productive to narration.

Everybody can read what they did, but I want to explain why they did it.

Welcome to "Beleg project", Robert of Melun.

Cheers!

Last week I had hardly time to drawing anything. I was preparing something that I'm really eager to do it. Something that means a lot for "Beleg project".

In two weeks I'm going to travel to Antwerp.

I've read pages and pages about this city. I've seen a lot of maps, old and new ones, but... I feel is not enough. I must see it, walk through its streets and smell its air, plenty of history.

It's going to be only three days, but I'll make the most of every second. I promise you some pictures in a couple of weeks.

Any suggestions? This is going to be great!

¿Alguna sugerencia? ¡Esto va a ser genial!

Sorry for the lack of real updates about my projects, but I really want to share this with you.

Next week, back to normal posts.

Cheers!

When we start a project, it's all enthusiasm. Nothing else matters. Our only thought is how it looks when we finish it. But we usually forget to think about how we're going to do it. That's a big problem.

I don't have all the time I'd like for my projects, I knew it when I started this blog. Now I must confess you one thing: "Beleg project" is a colossal comic project with more than 500 pages. So the question is: Can I really finish it? I don't know.

Four months ago I asked me the same question, and now, chapter one is completely writed. Who knows? Maybe I won't be able to finish it but this morning...

This morning pencil touched "Beleg project" for the first time.

The journey has begun.

Cheers!

Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt. Three rivers with a lot of history. Three natural defenses for The Low Countries' bloody war. Rhine and Meuse were almost all the time in the fight. But Scheldt seemed impassable to the Spanish forces.

That was the situation in 1584 when the catholic army reached Scheldt bank. Under Farnesio's leadership, Spanish forces had been unstoppable but Willem van Orange knew his opponent plan.

Antwerp, Bruges, Mechelen, Ghent, and other important cities was in danger and Scheldt was the key. The faction that taken control of Scheldt could win the war.

But is not easy dominate a river. Neither stop it. But this is another story, and it will be related in "Beleg project"

Cheers!
Pero no es fácil dominar un río. Tampoco pararlo.

Geoffrey Parker is , probably, the most important historian specialized in Eighty Years Wars. His works are always inspiring for me.

Now that I'm busy correcting and sketching "Beleg project" first chapter, provisionally entitled "The enclosure", let me show you the following text, written in the foreword of Mr. Parker's work "The Army of Flanders and the Spanish Road, 1567-1659. Every time someone ask me why I'm making a comic about Eighty years wars, I send him to read this:

"The professional soldier likes wars that are clean, short and decisive; the Low
Countries’ Wars were the antithesis of this tidy pattern. The ‘Military Participation
Ratio’, as so often in a civil war, was extremely high, and therefore the distinction
between poorly armed, reluctant soldiers and militant, determined civilians, between
regular and guerilla warfare, was often difficult to determine. The Hauptschlachten,
the ‘big battles’ beloved of military historians, were few, while the messy, indecisive
conflict provided little scope for the emergence of a ‘military genius’. Those who
ascribe historical importance to Bruce’s spider or Cleopatra’s nose will find the
history of the Eighty Years’ War a profound disappointment: personal initiatives
and good luck were quickly neutralized by the stultifying conditions of warfare. The
war continued for over eighty years before the loser conceded defeat. Small wonder,
then, that those reared on Clausewitz and the Führereigenschaft should dismiss the
clumsy military marathon in the Netherlands as an uninteresting aberration.

Those who witnessed the long struggle for the mastery of the Low Countries
thought differently. The wars, which began in earnest in 1572 and continued with
only one break until 1659, formed the seminary in which generations of military
commanders in hostilities elsewhere (including the Thirty Years’ War, the Civil Wars
in Britain and Ireland, even the colonial conflicts in America) learnt their profession.
The armies fighting in the Netherlands provided a mirror in which other forces of
the day adjusted their techniques and a yardstick by which they measured their
military effectiveness."

With my deepest respects, Mr. Parker, wishing your knowledge and my pencils will meet each other someday.

Cheers!

I've said in another posts that "Beleg project" have a lot of characters. I've shown you some of them: Spanish people, Dutch people and both sides leaders. But in this post, I want to talk you about my story main character: He dicho en otros post que el "Proyecto beleg" tiene un montón de personajes.

Here it is. Or, at least, here it is sketched by me. Yes, my comic main character is not a person, it's a city.

All in the comic is related to this city. The  plot is constantly spinning around it. In 1584, this city was sieged by Spanish troops and my story talks about how courageous it was attacked and how tenacious it was defended. What? Do you want to know what city is?

Well, I'll give you some clues:

1. Its name means "throwing hand" because of an ancient legend.

2. Pieter Paul Rubens, the famous painter, lived there. In fact, he's buried in this city, in Saint Jacob's church.

3. In 1576, Spanish soldiers plundered the city.  They killed 7000 citizens and 800 houses were burnt down. This event was called the "Spanish fury".

Do you know what city is now?

Cheers!

3. En 1576, soldados españoles saquearon la ciudad. Mataron a 8000 ciudadanos y quemaron 800 casas. Este evento fue llamado la "furia española".

¿Sabeis ya que ciudad es?

¡Saludos!

Not much to share this week. I'm starting to wirte final script for "Beleg project" first chapter, and there is not enough time to drawing.

While I'm writing, I can't avoid a responsibility feeling, a little pressure. This comic has been in my mind for more than 8 years, but now, at last I'm writing it. "Beleg project" is so personal that I can't let me fail. I have to write it right and draw it right, just I have imgined it during these 8 years.

So, sorry if I can't show more, but I promise you I'm working. Really, really hard.

Cheers!

(Ok, ok, don't look that way, I'll show you something... Here you are an unfinished sketch for the leadersof every faction)

¡Saludos!

This week, a little post to show you something about my research process for "Beleg project".

Make an historical comic is a risky business. You don't need just a good story, but also to be accurate and correct when you show the period you're talking about.

"Beleg project" starts in 1584, a very special year in Eighty years wars. Do you know why? No? Well. here you are some clues:

Conflict. Always conflict. It is as natural to human being as drink, feed or breathe. A story without a conflict is a dead story.

In "Beleg project"  there is a obvious conflict: war. Spain and United Provinces fought a dirty war, plenty of sieges, sackings and bloody skirmishes in present Belgium.

My webcomic is situated in one of these sieges. A really big one. In a moment when catholic armies star was specially brilliant. But United Provinces were not going to surrender easily and they were decided to fight. The big question will be : Is Spain forces powerful enough to aim a decisive stab to the rebellion?

Perhaps you could think that because I'm Spanish, catholic will be presented as heroes and Protestants will be the evil enemy. It's a fair question, but my comic is not about good guys and bad guys. War is more serious than this. Honor, loyalty... yes, you will see all of this in my story, but also cruelty, humiliation and other mean things... in both sides.
Conflicto. Siempre conflicto.

While I continue with writing the first chapter process, here you are some of the sketches I did for dutch characters. What do you think of them?

Cheers!

"Characters who are on screen from start to finish are not necessarily the ones who have the greatest impact."
 -Jeanne Moreau

Are the characters important in a story? Obviously yes. If you want to write a good story you must pay attention to every character who appears in it. Every one of them must be credible, with his virtues and faults, his passions and his objetives.

In "Beleg Project" there are a lot of characters, some of them historical characters and others not. This is a huge challenge for me so, before I start to draw any page I have to work to define every character, not only their personality but also their appearance.

When I'm ready to draw a character, I make a character sheet with some sketches of these character. I draw him with different facial expressions that can help me to establish how he really looks like.

Make a comic is completely different to illustration work. The characters appearance must be recognizable all over the comic. To help me in that point I used real actors photos to create every character's face. All this material (Character sheets, photographs...) shold be enough for now.

If you want to see what I'm talking about here you are some sketches for spanish soldiers character I made.

What do you think of them? Do you like it?

Cheers!
¿Que pensais de ellos? ¿Os gustan?

¡Saludos!

I love comic-books. In fact, that's the reason why I'm illustrator now. From Spiderman to Mort & Phil, I still have hundreds of comics in my house.

I made some short comics in my youth ( even now, I'm preparing a  4 pages comic for a contest) but never try with a long story.

Thinking about it, I want to start this renaissance adventure with a web-comic. I'll need a lot of preparations, because I want a high quality results. After all, this is the biggest project in my mind, for now, to this adventure.

Anyway, It's officially called "BELEG PROJECT", and I really wanted to talk you about it.

"Beleg Project" is a story situated in the Eighty years wars, in a period that could change the history of all Europe. This war is not really well-known for the majority of the public, but I hope this comic show you how Spain and the United Provinces fought in a long, bloody, dirty and also, technologically revolutionary war.

Wish me luck...

It's too soon for now. I'm working in the story and rough sketching the first pages, I think it could be ready to release at the beginning of 2013. I promise show you advances during this year.

What do you think? Is a web comic a good start?  Perhaps too ambitious?

Meanwhile, here you are a little image from an old comic project I did.

Cheers!

¡Saludos!
