"Osuna project" no more: Nunca mas "Proyecto Osuna":

The game is almost ready for an open beta version. At least, my work as game designer is over for now: the game is tested, corrected and ready for playing. What a hard work!

It's time for my favorite part: illustration. During the next weeks, while I'm drawing and laying out all the game, I'm going to write some post talking about all the process until this point. Finally, at the beginning of 2013, the game (rules and cards) will be released.

Stay alert, because things starts to moving fast here.

Cheers!

(Note: The game logo is just sketched. Don't panic!)

24.

What a two weeks!

I've spending last two weeks testing and testing "Osuna project". More than twenty-five games in fifteen days... it's a good start.

First of all, thank you, THANK YOU to all the people who play the game in this days. Thank you for your patience, your opinions, your advices and your support.

Well, conclussions: I like how the game works, but there are things that must be improved. I've seen some details that still doesn't work properly.

1. The game is more chaotic than I expected. I wanted a little chaos (like life in a 17th century court) but not so much. I fear sometimes players didn't know if they were playing correctly.

2. Too many characters with too many different abilities. I'm thinking make the game more simple restricting abilities to five or six. This new kind of abilities will mark how characters are connected.

3. The game need more "flavor" of the period. This is the hardest point... I need to think more about that.

He visto algunos detalles que no funcionan correctamente.

But after all, I'm very happy. The game core works and it's time to think in the printable version.

Hard work ahead. A lot of illustrations must be finished. A rulebook must be written. Version 0.1.0 is at the end of the way.

Cheers!

¡Saludos!

<<To anyone who will read it

I write at the end of a life and the beginning of another: about a monarch who ended being king before reign, and about another who began to reign before he became king, a saint, so great that deserved to have a son who, distorted the line of succession (before if I may, I will say improved), is grandson introduced in father of his grandparents. He, as formidable on the threshold of life that in a few hours of rigor, justice and prisons, has made good many years of  not convenient mercy and kindness from his father, and even when he began to reign, he  followed this road, though more slowly.

My intent is to place before the eyes of all how much King and how great he is in seventeen years, and how much ruin in twelve hours, and how many wonders in a fortnight, and how the brain is ahead of the first flower of age, not without shame hair latter end.

Neither ponder or dissimulate actions, and because I intend to inform the ears, not offend them or give them away, I let the wickedness of my silence send the guesswork about Spain state when death, with pitiful warning, made invention from large ruins.

Imprisoned in Tower of Juan Abad, May 16, 1621.

This is the test for "Osuna project" Prince Card. Next week will be very important for the game because I'll show it to people out of my family and friend circle.

Wish me luck!

I'm planning a big private testing for "Osuna project" in November. That will be the last step for 0.0.2 version and I'll start to prepare rule book for the next public printable beta version (version 0.1.0).

In the meantime, I continue drawing characters for Court Cards. Do you want to see some of them? I 'm dealing with this just right now:

A very busy week, plenty of commissions. I have a lot work to do in my drawing table for the next two or three weeks, BUT I've finished this right now: Una semana ocupada, llena de encargos.

I've made it in color, because it's possible that if beta testing goes well I'll go for a definitive version in color.

By the way, this is just the first character that I draw for "Osuna project". First thing first, I have to do a lot of thing before thinking in a new version. But let me dream for a moment... and let me show you a "definitive" Court Card test:

Beautiful, isn't it? Ah...

Cheers!
¿Bonita verdad? Ays...

Last week I made this for "Osuna project": La última semana hice esto para el "Proyecto Osuna":

And... it fits perfectly in a Court Card: Y... encaja perfectamente en una Carta de Corte:

So... I'm very happy. Yes, really, it's great to see your project becoming more "serious" and "professional". In the next post I'll show it in color (grey scale, to be correct).

What do you think? Do you like it?

Cheers!

The new version of "Osuna project" keeps moving forward. The Court Card background (yes, I've decided change Favorite card's name for Court card) is finished: La nueva versión del "Proyecto Osuna" continua avanzando.

I've made some little changes in this card since game first version, so let me explain you how it is divided and how it works in the game.

Every Court Card represent a character in Madrid court in 1621. In the top of the card you can see the character name and in the left frame you'll see a character illustration (over the Madrid Royal Palace background that you can see actually). I'm not going to use real character names, just some archetypical descriptions. In right bottom corner you can see three numbers. This represent the Power of that character in the three  levels of baroque society: Social, Political and Ecclesiastical. This values are used to winning Prince Card events. In the right frame you can read a special ability of that character, different for every card. This special ability breaks basic rules and add some spice to the game. In the left bottom corner you can see a bells. That icon are used to determine when the game is over.

Players draw Court Cards at the beginning of every turn. Then put up to three face down over the table. When a Prince card is revealed they can face up Court Card and choose to use it normally (adding to their score the card Power values) or turn it to the right and use the special ability of the character. When a Court Card is faced up, players must play another Court Card face down from his hand up to five on the table. When the battle for Prince Cards is over, all the Court Cards faced down return to the players hand and, if they don't have five cards in hand, return faced up cards until they get five.

Buff! I known it looks complicated (and my English is horrible, I know it too!), but I promise you a rulebook when I finish all this new version.

Cheers!

¡Saludos!

When I started "Osuna Project", I made a tacky prototype with paper and a piece of card for testing the game. It had to be useful, not beautiful, and I assure you it was. In fact, it is still useful.

But, while I think some details over, I've started to work in a demonstrable version. After all, I'd like other people, out of my family and friends, could play this game.

This new version will be made in gray scale for to be easily printed. Below this lines you can see a work in progress of Favorite's card background.

What do you think of it? Am I doing it right?

Cheers!

¡Saludos!

It has been hard, but "Osuna project" version 0.0.2 is ready to be played.

I'm very happy with this new step, because there are some significant changes but game core remains unaltered. Now Favorite's cards are more flexible and players are forced to cooperate with the other team members to win so the main problems detected in last version are solved.

I have been working in this version for the last three weeks and I have overcame some stagnation periods. In these moments, it was great to have another project running, like "Beleg project" because I can avoid sensation of frustration and still feel myself productive.

Now it's time to face trial by error phase. Testing, testing and more testing with this version to see if game maths works properly and correct  minor details (family and friends, be ready).

Ah, it's good to see thing moving forward!

Cheers!

¡Saludos!

Patience. I really have a problem with this part.

When I had the main idea for "Osuna project" it seems wonderful for me. I made a first prototype to try the basics of the game. And it was already wonderful.

In this early version, I included just a few cards with no special rules. The game was easy to understand and fast to play but, I must be honest, it was a little bit monotonous and boring.

No problem, I didn't implement advanced rules yet. And it was at this point when nothing seems wonderful anymore. Everything in the game is chaotic now.

No panic. I knew that to design a game  was not going to be easy. It requires patience. Every project, in fact, requires patience. The difference between "Osuna project" current state and "Beleg project" current state is that I have experience as illustrator and not as game designer.

But look at the illustration above this lines. Seven post ago it was just a head drawing. Now it's complete. I have had patience and this is the result.

I started this blog to show you how I create games, comic, etc... And patience is a step in that process. A hard one, but necessary.

Cheers!
Paciencia.

Y me siguió pareciendo maravilloso.

No pánico.

¡Saludos!

Cut and glue, cut and glue...

First tests to "Osuna project" version 0.0.1.
Corta, pega, corta, pega...

Conclusions: good feelings and a lot of work to do. Game mechanics works very well, but this is just the beginning. I think I'll make some adjustment before let other people play the game.

How do it works? Players are divided in two teams equal in number. Then every team play at the same time the following steps in turn sequence:

- Draw cards
- Play a Prince's card
- Play Favorite's cards
- Resolve old Prince's cards
- Recalculate influence and check King's health

Basically, there are two card types in "Osuna project": Prince's cards and Favorite's cards.

Prince's cards are events. This events are focused in win the young Prince's (Philip IV) affection before his father dies.

Favorite's cards are resources. There are three resource types: possessions, riches and allies. Every team needs these resources to compete for winning Prince's cards and influence over Philip IV.

How does it sound? Do you think this is a good theme/ approach?

Very soon, every card type in detail and more rule explanation.

Cheers!

¡Saludos!

The theme in a game, the art in a game, the accessories in a game, the rules, the mechanics, the engine, etc...

You can find discussions all over the internet about what is more important in a game. For me, answer is very clear: all, as a whole, is important.

Games with innovative mechanics but with a horrible art design are less attractive for customers. Interesting themes with a poor development produces boring games.

I think a good game is like a balance. If some part of of the game eclipse any other, the whole game will be unbalanced.

Perhaps I'm wrong but is my point of view...

In "Osuna project" I took some  preliminary notes for any part of the game before I start to think in the first prototype.

Here you are some of the most important:

Theme: In 1621, King Philip III of Spain dies. During his reign, his favourite, the Duke of Lerma first and later his son, take the government is his name. Philip III's son, Philip IV will be the new king, and a new family, the Zuniga-Guzmán tries to steal the new king's favor to Lerma's family, the Sandoval Rojas.

Art: Inspired in Velazquez and El Greco's art. Colorfull but with lights and shades in high contrast.

Engine: Card based game. Played for 4 players or more (always in even number of players) in two teams, the two families in conflict. Only one winner, it will contribute to alliances and betrayals.

Mechanics: Simple turn sequence. The two teams plays at the same time every step of the turn.

Rules: Short rule book. Every special rule used in the game must be explained in the cards.

Accessories: Only some tokens. The game could be played in small surfaces.

And that's all for now. Next post, first pictures.

Cheers!

¡Saludos!

"We don't stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing"

- George Bernard Shaw

Gaming is always fun. A healthy competition. With somebody or alone, it's very common to see me playing. Board games, card games, video games, role playing games, miniatures wargames... oh, I like them all.

Why not then trying to create some games for this renaissance adventure?

"Osuna project" will be my first attempt to create a complete game. It will be a confrontation between two noble families for the control of the imperial Spanish court. Renaissance is, after all, the age of favourites: ministers who reigned in the name of weak princes and kings.

"Osuna project" will be a card game. The players will compete in two groups but (and that's the key of that game) there will be only one winner in the end. Could you control the enemies and your team-mates at the same time?

I'm starting to make a playable prototype, so I hope I can show you more information about this game very soon.

Well, now I've introduce you myself and the first to projects in this adventure. Time to work!

Cheers!

¡Saludos!
